It’s coming home, it’s coming home. Football’s coming home. Well, who would have thought we’d still be singing this as the UEFA European Championships 2024 final looms, with ENGLAND actually in with a chance of winning it, albeit if Spain fail to turn up.
Not only that, but Sir Keir Starmer is also slowly but surely sorting out the weather, too. The sun shone for nearly five hours yesterday. I’m telling you, the guy is a bloody genius. In fact, I might ask him to “have a word” with my esteemed boss to see if he can get me a decent pay rise. (OK, fair enough, even he can’t work miracles.)
Still, as the countdown to Sunday’s Euros final begins, you may be left wondering how it will all pan out.
For merienda, I might just have the answer. You see, I may not know much about marketing but ever since my granddad took me to my first game of footie, I’ve been building my knowledge of the, er, not so beautiful English game. And, naturally, there are some parallels between footie and marketing.
Both require plenty of balls, attention to detail, a sharp mind and creative thinking. Let’s face it, if you don’t put in the hours in either football or marketing you could either end up flat on your arse or facing the hell of squeaky bum time as you cling on in the hope of a positive result. (Mind you, apparently some people do enjoy a sqeaky bum.)
Personally, I am hoping that Spain just have a shocker. After all, their back four is hardly “different gravy”, even with Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal returning from suspension.
And, as we all know, our boys can open up their bodies and sometimes create something out of nothing – it’s about time they did as most of the tournament they haven’t been able to hit a barn door.
But with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Ollie (who knew?) Watkins and even Harry (knackered) Kane, we don’t really need a fancy build up; they can smash one in from all over the park.
Of course, getting the ball off Spain and doing something useful with it, is easier said than done; Spain have been light years ahead of the rest with the use of the ball at Euro 2024. And, while the rest have tended to prioritise muscle and power over possession, relying on individual stars to make the difference, Spain have been the team with the most cohesive plan.
Still, what do I care? I am going to follow a classic tip that my granddad gave me back in the day which is that you should always place a bet on the opposition to beat you, and then if you do lose, you have some money to drown your sorrows.
And, at least if football doesn’t come home this weekend, you’ll be too smashed to care. Now that really is a win-win.
